Published by RailCONNECT
Welcome to the third edition of RailCONNECT, a quarterly publication available on-line at
www.railconnect.co.uk and in print format. We hope all of our readers are finding this publication a useful industry communication tool, to bridge the gap between buyers and suppliers in the Rail industry.
In this edition, we have our regular features from Christian Wolmar; a writer and broadcaster specialising in transport. He has covered the railways since privatisation in the mid 1990s and writes regularly for national newspapers and magazines. In this quarter, Christian looks back at the remarkable developments and advancements the Docklands Light Railway has achieved as it celebrates its 25th
anniversary this year, on pages 4-5. Ever get the feeling you’re being watched? Christian gets an inside look at the new communications hub operated by the British Transport Police, which monitors a staggering 33,000 CCTV cameras in London and the South East, on pages 20-21. To find out more about the HLOS announcement, flick to pages 22-23 where Christian discusses the positive impact this has for the railways. Finally on pages 24-25 Christian looks at the challenges ahead of the government as the idea of giving more power to local authorities over train services becomes more appealing.
We also have our regular articles covering Law, Health & Safety, Finance, Recruitment, Environment, Security and Q&A’s, which in this edition are answered by Chief Executive of ATOC, Michael Roberts, to keep you abreast of issues within the industry.

In addition to our regular features, RailCONNECT also got in touch with Annette Gevaert, Director of Rail Transport at Achilles who discusses how procurement in the rail industry will need to change rapidly if it is to deliver the demands of the government and rail users on pages 46-47. Margaret Hickish, Inclusive Design Director at Movement Strategies, also gives us an insight into what it is like for a disabled person to travel on our public railways independently on pages 44-45. And finally, we speak to Railway Children and Samaritans about their upcoming campaigns and what you as a rail business can do to help on pages 48-49 and 50-51.
Do make use of our convenient and up to date directory covering a range of companies and breadth of products and services available to the rail industry starting from pages 52. If your company isn’t currently listed, please refer to our inclusion form on pages 75-76 or alternatively e-mail
directory@theconnectseries.co.uk.
RailCONNECT is about your industry so we welcome your editorial contributions. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch should you have any comments or suggestions as we are always interested to hear your views. Do also look out for our printed copies of RailCONNECT at The Electric Congress Event at the Grange City Hotel on 16th Conference on 27th
