Thinking About Death Can Invigorate One’s Life
be spent on the people we care about and the people who care about us and not those who superficially “friend” us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter. If one actually placed a telephone call to one of those “friends” and told them they needed something, the “Facebook friend” would probably hang up on them; all the while thinking, “How dare they call me, don’t they know a ‘Facebook friend’ is different from a real friend.”
Unfortunately, the same goes for BY ANGELA JONES While speaking with a friend
recently, I discovered that a friend of his died unexpectedly on the Sunday prior to our conversation. He was a seemingly healthy thirty-four year old and just died in his sleep. On the other hand, I visited another friend of mine in Greensboro, North Carolina last week, Ida Jenkins, who is 101 years old. Until last year, she was still living alone and preparing her own meals. The point I am trying to make is that we never know the day or the hour that our lives will end; therefore, we should try to prepare for death as best we can and live each day to the fullest.
Since our time of death can rarely
be predetermined, it is important and responsible to prepare a will. The decision to have life insurance is something that one can sometimes leave to their discretion; however, a will is a necessity if one has minor children or has assets they want to leave to specific individuals. If one does not have a will or a trust, their property may be divided according to their state’s law of intestate succession.
Another matter to contemplate, as
we acknowledge that our time here is limited, is the question, “Exactly how valuable is my time?” If we value our time, we are less apt to allow people to waste it. Our precious time should
texting. There are people who only converse with each other through text messages. In most cases, either they do not want to talk to each other at all or it is one sided; furthermore, the person who would like to have a real friendship recognizes their place and keeps things superficial through texting.
It is important that we teach our
children the difference between real friends and superficial friends. Children should be taught not waste time with relationships that are simply time killers. Although they are children, their time is also valuable. Instead of spending hours on Facebook or texting, they could be reading or searching for scholarships or educational material online. Imagine if they were to use all of the time they normally spend texting and online, meeting real friends by playing outside in their neighborhood, as we did when we were children; they could even benefit from spending the extra time with relatives who care about their well being and who may not live to see another day.
As we think about our mortality,
we should consider the one thing that is truly the most important to us. Is it the size of our bank accounts? Is it the size of our house? Do we value the cars we own more than people? Or, are there relationships that are more important to us than material things? If our relationships are more important than material possessions, we need to be working toward the goal of being able to spend as much of whatever time we have left with the people who we love and who love us.

business strategists and analysts of the boomer marketplace.
$10,000 Competition Winner The summit also hosted a com-
petition—with a $10,000 top prize--in search of new business plans and market ideas. The contest brought to Silicon Valley great business talent from around the nation, who are reaching out for investors.
This year’s competition
demonstrated the progress the conference has had since it started in 2004. Competitors pitched a variety of ideas ranging from a less painful and more efficient procedure to remove kidney stones, to a website that allows the users to customize their funerals to celebrate a person’s live for future generations.
Winning this year’s competition
was HyloMimetics, which is developing a “bioinspired molecule that prevents the progression of osteoarthritis and restores healthy cartilage.” In plain words, their product promises to use new biomedical technology to heal debilitating osteoarthritis without invasive surgery.
A panel of experts in aging,
business analysts and venture capitalists heard the presentation in an on-stage

presentation reminiscent of the reality TV show, “The Shark Tank,” and deliberated to select the best business pitch. Although HyloMimetics got the giant check, the other competitors got a valuable opportunity to present their products in front of many potential investors, partners and experienced strategists.
“We had some very talented
entrepreneurs out here,” Furlong said. “Large companies can look at this as potential people to invest in, and entrepreneurs can find people that they can work with in the future. It’s the beginning of building an online community.” Many past non-winners, she noted, have met investors at the conference, who helped move their products to the marketplace.
Furlong, the author of Turning
Silver into Gold: How to Profit in the New Boomer Marketplace (Financial Times Press, 2007), continued, “We had more solid plans. It’s always been great, but there’s just more people interested in this space.”
She explained, “Baby boomers are
now right in the middle of 44 to 66, so there are so many people coping with issues related to helping older people, there needs to be a revolution in the field of aging. And it’s not going to come from Washington (D.C.), but from entrepreneurs.”
