Old school hall Speed limit finally agreed
could be home THE owner of the Old School Hall in East Farleigh has ap- plied to turn the first floor into residential use. Mandy Howard has contin-
ued using the ground floor for community events – the village pre-school meets every week- day morning and there are reg- ular Brownies, Zumba and dance schools booked up – since buying the building last December. She now wants to live up-
stairs to help fund the facility. In a planning application also requesting the installation of internal doorways and creation of a first-floor balcony, she wrote: “The income from book- ings currently just covers the cost of running the hall.We are investing personal funds to im- prove the ground floor and tidy and renovate the upper floor. “If we are to continue to run
the ground floor for the benefit of the community, we have to find a way to make the upper floor pay for itself, whichwill be possible if it becomes our home. “The upper floor has never
been used for public lettings and is considered unsustain- able because it has nomeans of escape and the stone staircase has multiple turns.” Maidstone Council will de- cide on the proposal.
WEST Farleigh is to get its long- awaited 30mph speed limit in Charlton Lane. The parish council has been campaigning for the speed limit for many years, but its accident rate did not make it a priority case with KCC. However, in view of residents’ concerns, Cllr Paulina Stockell agreed to fund the scheme through her member’s highway fund budget. Planswerethwartedatthe
11th hour, when Charlton Lane resident Paul Bain carried out his own survey, which revealed
residents were in favour of some kind of speed restriction – but not the signage. However, Maidstone Joint
Transportation Board heard signs were a statutory requirement and painting speed markings on the roadwas not an alternative. West Farleigh Parish Council chairman Bruce Scott told the board: “We want to make it clear that residents still want this (speed restriction). It is im- portant. It is a rural area, with a playground at one end, no paths for some of its length and a dan- gerous road. We appreciate all
that has been done andwewant it to go ahead.” The board agreed to imple-
ment the proposals, and Cllr Stockell said: “I propose we do it as quickly as possible. It has been a long-running saga and is badly needed.” Cllr Malcolm Robertson said
he was afraid the limit would not have a great impact on driver behaviour, and said: “It will be interesting to compare the profiles before and after the change. However, if it gives res- idents peace of mind, that’s great.”
