Dear Erick,

How can I get that fun beachy look for my hair without the wonderful frizz that the humidity instantly gives my natural curls in the summer? - Sam

Dear Sam, I’ve been saying for some time now that curls are making a

major comeback. I think that we will start seeing perms again in the next few years, but not like your grandmother’s perm or what you rocked in the 80s. Fighting frizz is the first place to start. The hard part is to

win that battle while keeping your hair beachy and full with a minimum of loss. I recommend using Deep Shine Volumizing shampoo and conditioner from Rusk; it is sulfa free and contains Argan oil which will tame frizz while giving your hair volume and shine. Next, you need a finger diffuser. Con Air makes one that you

can pick up at Sally’s Beauty Supply which fits most dryers. Use the diffuser with your dryer on low speed, but high heat. Don’t brush or comb your hair; let the diffuser do the work, keeping the fingers of the diffuser on your scalp and moving it slowly in a circular motion. If you follow the heat of the dryer down your hair shaft, do so from the scalp down while scrunching your hair into the diffuser. All of this should help you to achieve the desired results.

If you want a little extra volume, spot tease in the desired areas, but just at the scalp. Do not touch the ends with a comb or brush. Before you blow dry, I would recommend applying Rusk Blo-foam root lifter and Being Sexy cream to help control the volume. If you have a few frizzy ends, invest in a curling wand. You

can’t get modern looks with antiquated tools. A normal curling iron will not give the same look as a curling wand. For those of you who are not blessed with natural curl, the curling wand is a great tool that will help you to achieve the same result. Thanks for the question, Sam… enjoy the summer and your

beautiful curls!
