What elements do you look for when framing a shot? The elements I look for when framing a shot is something of a lost art. Photography is the study of light, and without the right light (or texture), the composition of an image doesn’t have the dimension and depth that I strive for. I utilize the basic rule of thirds, which is that the frame can be divided into three vertical sections and three horizontal sections. Wherever the separating lines connect is an ideal spot for a subject or point of interest. However, a teacher once told me that “rules are made to be broken,” so once the rule of thirds is understood,

it is acceptable to break the rule.

Let’s talk about your upcoming workshops and Costa Rica photo/nature trip(s)… Starting in December 2012, the Journeyman Gallery will have a

plethora of workshops. The workshops will focus on wildlife/nature, best places to photograph in SWFL, best places to photograph inter- nationally, basic camera in struction, photography software and man- agement, and photography related to websites. Check out my website journeymangallery.com in November when the upcoming season is set.

Regarding Costa Rica, I plan to run one or two trips per year,

one in winter 2013 (February) and one in September 2013. For years, I have photographed and observed wildlife at a private reserve near Siquirres, called Las Brisas Nature Reserve. I take guests to an area where the nature is nearly incomparable, and where they can visit the reserve day and night – instead of following set park hours. It’s diffi- cult to see Costa Rica “off the beaten path,” now – it has become very commercialized.

Do you have any advice for someone who wants to take their photography “hobby” to the next level? What is the

basic equipment someone would need? My advice is to have a plan of attack. First, purchase a DSLR body and basic walk-around lens. From that point, make a list of lenses (wide angle, telephoto, specialty lenses), and purchase them one at a time, based upon the type of photography that interests you most.

The Journeyman Gallery offers its space to businesses, indi- viduals and facilitators who want to host an event at the gal- lery. The gallery offers a 90-inch pull-down screen, projector and Bose sound system for presentations. The space is ideal for yoga/meditation classes and for businesses in the tour- ism/travel industry. It is located at 850 Seagate Drive directly across the street from Waterside Shops, on the second floor of the Hertz building. The gallery is open by appointment, and hosts weekly Thursday Night Open Houses from 6-8pm.
