n 1 August – an evening that Team GB secured its first gold medals of the London 2012 Olympics – more than 100
key players from the sector gathered at an Games celebration hosted by SkillsActive. Our aim was to celebrate the 2012 Games,
and SkillsActive’s contribution to it – 31 of our Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence programme (AASE) apprentices are representing Team GB – and watching Michael Jamieson take silver in the 200m breaststroke was one of the highlights. We were delighted to welcome Anna
Hemmings MBE, Britain’s most success- ful female marathon canoeist, a two-time Olympian and former SkillsActive board member, hosting the event. She also com- pered a question and answer session with me and our new chair Peter Rowley, which I hope proved a useful introduction and also highlighted our aspirations for the future. As a former Olympian myself, I see many
parallels between my time as an elite ath- lete and leading SkillsActive through a significant period of political funding and internal change. Athletes can bring many transferable skills to the world of business, as illustrated by the success of AASE. AASE has helped 31 athletes competing
in these Games to make the journey from talented athlete to world class performer. It is also supporting many more training for Rio 2016, while there are very success- ful initiatives in football, rugby (union and league), golf and cricket. Last year alone, more than half of our rugby union appren- tices secured professional contracts. We are now one of the largest delivery
sectors in the UK economy with more than 11,400 completions per year via SkillsActive and a further 12,000 via Habia, the govern- ment-appointed standards setting body for hair, beauty and spa therapy. Tree years ago, SkillsActive’ footprint was 650,000 people across five sectors. Now it represents nearly 3 million people (including 2 mil- lion volunteers) and seven sectors such as sports, fitness and beauty among others.
