[EDITOR’S NOTE]
How deep is the universe and will we ever reach an edge to space? It was just a little over 40 years ago that the United States’ Apollo 11 was the fi rst manned mission to land on the moon. Prior to the expedition, reaching the moon was far-fetched; however, in 1957 with the launch of the Soviet’s Sputnik, the “Space Race” between the United States and the Soviet Union was ignited. T e goal, initially, was national security and technological superiority with a goal to put a man on the moon; but out of this challenge, the United States emerged with the civilian space agency we now know
as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Today, NASA has continued to explore the limits of space. When ideas are tested, it is these challenges that push our limits, capabilities and ultimately improve our understanding of the world. In this issue of Wire Rope Exchange, we build on the idea of being a “daredevil” in some ways while testing our boundaries of knowledge in others. We meet a known daredevil himself, Nik Wallenda, whose walk across Niagara Falls had
never been accomplished before, nor had a tightrope ever been rigged across the 1,800-foot gorge. O’Connell Electric gives us an inside look to the unique project and how their team strung a cable weighing 7.5 tons across Horseshoe Falls. We also continue with part 2 of the George Washington Bridge article series. Author and historian, Cliff ord Zink, takes a look at the “Once-in-a-Lifetime” renovation work being done on the iconic bridge that carries hundreds of thousands of cars each day. Finally, we come full circle with WireCo WorldGroup’s current work with NASA. In 2007, the Orion spacefl ight program set out to replace the now retired space shuttle mission. T e goal was to provide a space capsule that would replace the retired Space Shuttle program and provide transportation to astronauts to the International Space Station. It was the legacy of a company called MacWhyte that made WireCo the “go-to” company when NASA contacted Airborne Systems, the direct supplier of the parachute systems being used in the Orion program. MacWhyte had originally supplied the parachute assemblies for the Apollo program in the 1960s, and WireCo is continuing that legacy today by developing a light, strong and more abrasion resistant wire rope for the next era in spacefl ight. I’m excited to share this issue with you. As the Exchange continues to expand, we’re seeking out new challenges that will off er advantages in communication, sales for your business and off er more opportunities for growth. Stay in touch and let us know what limits you are pushing in your business!

INTERNATIONAL, just sent us this photo of him standing next to the 340MT reel made by KISWIRE at their Neptune 2 factory and ready for delivery to Gaylin’s Singapore facility. The reel shown here is the heaviest reel made by KISWIRE. With this 340MT reel, KISWIRE broke their previous record of two reels each 220MT made for Gaylin in May of this past year.
ON THE CF&I LEGACY, JUNE 13, 2012: DOUG DRY OF MIDCO SLING sent us a note in reference to our May-June 2012 Issue featuring The Legacy of CF&I. In his email, we learned we missed a fascinating piece to the history: “My father, Bob Dry, worked for CF&I for many years. In fact, he gave Ken Kirby his fi rst job in the wire rope industry, fl ew on the company plane shown in one of the photos, worked with all of the men in your article and is, I suspect, the sole survivor among the ‘old-timers’ featured in this most interesting piece.”
