Adama Sallé’s Pakitalaki, Portrait Of A Family captures the disintegration of a family in the Burkina Faso capi- tal of Ouagadougou, after its mem- bers fall on hard times. “It is a story with international appeal in this time of global fi nan-
cial crisis,” says producer Sophie Sal- bot of production company Athénaise. “Family breakdown, young peo-
ple leaving their countries in search of work and the despair created by fi nancial problems are events under- stood the world over,” she adds. Paris-based producer Salbot has a
long history of working in Burkina Faso, beginning with Idrissa Oue- draogo’s Samba Traoré in 1992.
“Burkina Faso is my adopted
home, if you like,” says Salbot, who followed Sallé’s progress even before his student days at the ESAV, the school of visual arts in Marrakech, having met him at an edition of Afri- cadoc in Belgium. “I consider Adama to be one of
the most talented up-and-coming directors in Burkina Faso today. Now I need to convince everyone else,” she says. Sallé has started to look for cast,
predominantly in Burkina Faso’s vibrant theatre scene, and the plan is to start shooting the film in mid- 2013.
