It is Olivier Pere’s third edition as artistic director of the Locarno Film Festival, and the former Quinzaine chief has already made a big impact on the festival which takes place over 12 days in the sumptuous lake- side town in southern Switzerland. Last year’s pro- gramme yielded an impressive number of memorable world premieres which would go on to play around the globe including Monsieur Lazhar, Headhunters and The Loneliest Planet. This year offers up a similar trove of tantalising
treasures including new titles from Stéphane Brizé and Jean-Claude Brisseau, Ilmar Raag’s Estonia- France co-production Une Estonienne A Paris which stars Jeanne Moreau and the European premiere of Cate Shortland’s Lore. And Pere isn’t shy of playing
broad, commercial pictures such as Nick Love’s highly touted London thriller The Sweeney, which will open the festival on the Piazza Grande, US male stripper hit Magic Mike, Ruby Sparks from Little Miss Sunshine directors Dayton & Faris and Ben Wheatley’s Cannes favourite Sightseers. Screen’s special Locarno focus explores the pro-
gramme but also looks into the festival’s outstanding industry initiatives from Open Doors, which this year has selected 12 projects from Francophone sub-Saha- ran Africa, the brand new STEP IN which will examine new strategies for distribution, exhibition and sales in eastern Europe, and Carte Blanche which will present seven films in post-production from Mexico.
