Oldest resident Win helps bring community together at party
RAIN didn’t dampen the spirits of revellers who turned out in the Maidstone area to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. From babies to great grandpar-
ents, families came out in force to mark the occasion with a plethora of red, white and blue. In HartnupStreet, residents took
a trip back in time, with a party reminiscent of the one they held on VJ Day in 1945. Street shopkeeper Suki Manak
and resident Claire Whitling were the driving forces behind theparty, which truly united the community and got neighbours chatting to each other – some of whom they had never met before! The street’s oldest resident Win
Winch (93)was selected to be the Diamond of the street this year, having moved to Hartnup Street fromCamberwell, south London, in 1952 – exactly 60 years ago. About 80 people joined in the fun, including four generations of
at least twofamilies, with relatives and guests from as far away as America. There was face painting and
chalk street art with traditional games, including an egg and spoon race, a bean bag race, a three-legged race and the games grand finale – a tug ofwar. Yvonne Lambert had collected
items from residents to produce a fascinating “All about Hartnup” display, from which, a very local history group is about to form. Two beautiful cakes were made
– a guess the weight chocolate cake and a spectacular purple cake, entitled CrownJewels, made by Becky Irving. A raffle, with prizes donated by
local businesses, residents and their guests, raised £500 for the Heart of Kent Hospice. Finally, in defiance to the ele- ments, everyone stood out in the rain and sang Land of Hope and Glory and Rule Britainnia!
In the Loose Valley, the Che- quers pub organised its an- nual Duck Race to coincide with the Jubilee celebrations and there was a bumper tea party for villagers on the King George V playing fields Pictures: Howard Marsh
Angie and Sue, managers at Trinity Foyer social housing charity (pictured left), made sure they looked the part for a Jubilee Party, and bunting and flags set the scene. Music was provided by Bloco Fogo samba band (above)
