ANCIENT QUIT-SMOKING METHODS beat patches, pills and gum by Jeremy Britton
5000 year-old technologies over 1000% more effective at quitting smoking
ACUPUNCTURE OR HYPNOSIS can be up to 1300% more successful in assisting people to quit smoking than using nicotine patches, medication or nicotine gum, a study has found. Research findings in the latest
American Journal of Medicine show that there are still plenty of questions, including exactly how effective alternative therapies might be and how they measure up against conventional methods to quit smoking, but the study looks promising. It is unlikely that pharmaceutical
companies will stop manufacturing nicotine supplements such as pills, patches or chewing gums, but the evidence for ‘going natural’ is compelling. The AJM research shows that acupuncture was over 1300% more effective in helping people to quit smoking than using patches or gum*. The same study showed that
hypnosis was similarly effective, around 1100% more effective than standard methods of quitting smoking, with 45% of hypnosis clients successfully quitting smoking compared to the 4% success rate of smokers who received no treatment*. Acupuncture is one of the earliest
known medical treatments, dating back to 3000 BC in China, and hypnosis was used by ancient Egyptians to overcome many physical and mental ailments. While very different in approach, the two methods do share some commonalities: including centuries of use in Eastern medicine and almost zero unwanted side-effects. Modern methods of acupuncture
have seen needles replaced by lasers in some practices, while some traditionalists still use sterilised needles. Hypnosis may have received
questionable publicity from comedy stage shows, but the psychological techniques
of clinical hypnotherapy can be widely applied to more serious matters as well. Many clients want hypnosis to quit
the smoking habit, but the same mental discipline can also assist them to quit other unwanted habits, such as working too hard or spending too much money. If a comedian can hypnotise a white man to dance like Michael Jackson, why not use it to change destructive habits or hypnotise a business person to think like Richard Branson?” There may be many side-effects
of nicotine-replacement medications, and these may be avoided by using
natural methods such as acupuncture or hypnosis. But what about the well-known side-effect of quitting smoking, where former smokers gain weight? Simple! Both acupuncture and hypnotherapy are successfully used to control weight too. Perhaps the old ways are best,
after all. In any case, older methods may prove to be less expensive than prescription medication, patches or gum. Besides, closing your eyes or being poked by needles could be preferable to the side-effects of nicotine-replacement drugs.
*55% of smoking acupuncture clients quit the habit compared to 4% of quitting smokers who received no acupuncture, a difference of 1375%. Quitting smoking with hypnosis was 1125% more successful than patches (45% quit rate vs 4%). Alternative treatments have almost zero adverse side- effects, whereas patches, gum and nicotine medication can cause unwelcome reactions in some people.
