[EDITOR’S NOTE] Upcoming Events
When we think about where we have come and where we are going, we rarely have time to think about where we are.We simply move forward. T is daily perseverance drives our businesses - it is the momentum that keeps us evolving and ready for the next challenge. Our cover story on the George Washington Bridge
epitomizes the legacy of those before us. Crossing the Hudson from Fort Lee to Washington Heights, we literally are able to see the hard work of the individuals who built it. In an interview with Jan Searls, daughter of Allen Searls,
a former cable rigger and original construction crewmember on the George Washington Bridge, she said something that
struck me; “when we think of legacies, we think of what they mean to us and the generations to come but rarely do we realize these legacies are but tributes to the lives who built them.” In the fi rst article of a two part series, Cliff ord Zink, writer and historian of T e
Roebling Legacy, writes our feature story on the George Washington Bridge taking us back 83 years to the original construction and the history of the Roebling cables. Our second feature on Colorado Fuel & Iron Co. (CF&I) connects some “historical dots,” tracing Roebling & Sons Co. to CF&I to some well-known modern day businesses within our industry. Between the stories of this issue, we continually fall back on the theme of legacies of entrepreneurs and the strong foundations they created. Allen Searls along with many other hardworking individuals set out daily to build their families, lives and businesses but, for the most part, did not have the opportunity to witness the greatness of their perseverance. T is issue honors the individuals and businesses that have laid the foundation for
great works - and while many may not have been able to see the fruit of their labors, many new entrepreneurs have taken the reigns where others have left off , joining together to build a shared legacy. Enjoy the issue and stay in touch to let us know how your business is growing!
