Wesley (John), Autograph letter signed, addressed to Miss Clarkson, April 5, 1781, near Chester 1pp., expressing his regard for her and sending encouraging words about her reading and writing, some browning and minor smudging, c.1cm tear with small loss, pasted down. Together with a Portrait Miniature of Miss Mary Clarkson, head and shoulders, inscribed verso Mary Clarkson, aged 26yr 3mo 0, Oct. 6th, 1781, oil on metal, oval, 132 x 109mm (2)


** Written by the Founder of Methodism some years after his wife had left him, the letter shows Wesley’s fondness for female friendship and correspondence in its emotional, but possibly indiscreet style. Miss Clarkson married an Independent Minister but after only a few months of marriage died, aged only 26, in October 1781. She ‘was always delicate’ (Proceedings of the Wesley Historical Society, vol. IV, p.16) £1,000-1,500
