** Written by the Founder of Methodism some years after his wife had left him, the letter shows Wesley’s fondness for female friendship and correspondence in its emotional, but possibly indiscreet style. Miss Clarkson married an Independent Minister but after only a few months of marriage died, aged only 26, in October 1781.
