Students are stitching up lucrative overseas markets

wenty-two Hunter TAFE fashion students undertaking their diploma of applied fashion design and technology have

developed concepts for the design of new staff uniforms for international hotel chain, the Marriott. Hunter TAFE was presented a unique

opportunity by BME Group, which designs and supplies uniforms for the leading hotel chain and has more than 3700 properties in 73 countries and territories worldwide. T e company invited Hunter TAFE

fashion students to develop design concepts for new uniforms for front-of- house, waiting and kitchen staff for the Marriott in China. Students were provided with a

brief to develop uniforms that were sophisticated, welcoming, yet practical and functional, based around a theme of migration and reunion. Hunter TAFE’s

fashion students conducted extensive research and developed their initial design concepts. T ese were presented to the Marriott’s senior management in Hong Kong. T e Marriott

selected the fi nal designs of three students, including April Gosper, Melanie Williams

and Jae Gilkinson to be used as a basis for their new staff uniforms. T e students’ designs are currently

being refi ned and will then be presented to the Marriott in Hong Kong and the US. “Feedback from the Marriott has been

extremely positive,” head fashion teacher Rose Brown said. “T ey were most impressed with the

standard of the students’ work and eff ort that went into their design submissions. T ey were astounded with the depth of talent and are looking at doing a similar project with Hunter TAFE in the future. “It’s been an incredible opportunity

to undertake a class project with an international client, especially one as prominent as the Marriott. T e students should be very proud of themselves and all their eff orts. To have their designs received so well and used as a basis for the new uniforms to go into production is an amazing achievement.”
