August, Scherfig to play Game

BY GEOFFREY MACNAB Two of the biggest talents in Scan- dinavian cinema are to join forces as Danish writer-director Lone Scherfig and Swedish actress- director Pernilla August are col- laborating on $6.4m period love story The Serious Game. “It is a Scandinavian dream team,” said Patrik Andersson, who produces alongside Fredrik Heinig. The f i lm, which August

Iris and Rezo prep Rainer, Pinocchio

BY MELANIE GOODFELLOW Luxembourg-based Iris Group, which announced it had acquired a stake in Rezo Films at Cannes last year, has unveiled a 10-picture slate of films due to be distributed in France and sold worldwide by its Paris-based partner. Upcoming productions include

German director Marco Kreuzpaint- ner’s Rainer Werner Fassbinder biopic, Rainer and Italian Enzo d’Alo’s feature-length animation Pinocchio, as well as Franziska Buch’s Upgrade starring Sandrine Bonnaire and Thure Lindhardt. Alongside the co-production

slate, the group is also involved in six festival titles including Bernard- Henri Lévy’s The Oath Of Tobruk, which Rezo sold to The Weinstein Company. Under last year’s deal, Jean-

Michel Rey’s Rezo Films became part of the Iris Group. “The beauty of partnering with

Rezo is that the group now has a dedicated sales operation for its films… it gives us extra muscle,” said Iris Group founding chief Nicolas Steil. “It is an extra, optional service we can offer our co-production partners.” Rainer is due to shoot from

spring 2013, with a four-month break in the middle so the, as yet uncast, lead can bulk up for the scenes capturing Fassbinder’s fi nal months. “We’re currently casting; we’ve got to get it right,” added Steil.

love story about a couple who meet early in life, go their separate ways and then meet again when they are married to other people. When they start an affair, the conse- quences for both are profound. The Serious Game is being made

through Stockholm-based B-Reel Feature Films and, while the book has been filmed twice before, B-Reel is promising a story in the vein of Jane Campion and Andrea Arnold’s work. Shooting is set to begin in 2013. Here in Cannes, B-Reel has con-

The fi lm is being co-produced by SVT, Film i Vast and Nimbus, with support by SFI and DFI. The Stockholm company is also

working on two feature docs: Palme, about murdered Swedish politician Olof Palme; and Stig Bjorkman’s next Ingmar Bergman doc, Fanny, Alexander & I, which looks at the process of putting his Fanny & Alexander on stage. B-Reel’s slate also includes

Mikael Marcimain’s love story thriller Gentlemen & Gangsters, due to shoot early next year.
