CitySolicitor

“tailored” LPCs, the shortcomings of the CPD scheme and the international competition for dominance between the English solicitor’s qualification and that of the New York Bar. Perhaps unexpectedly, the Training Contract was not considered in any detail in the Discussion Paper though it is relevant to the “mismatch in numbers” issue.

The Training Committee will be commenting on these issues to the researchers.

As part of the process of drawing CLLS members attention to the LETR, an Open Meeting was arranged on 28 March at which the Co-Chairs of the LETR’s Consultation Steering Panel, Dame Janet Gaymer and Sir Mark Potter spoke about the Review prior to a discussion with the CLLS members present.

The discussion was wide ranging, covering the impact of new structures (ABS, the use of paralegals etc), the contents & future of the Qualifying Law Degree, the Training Contract & the cost of training, the stage at which the title “Solicitor” should be awarded, the CPD scheme and the international dimension.

The issues debated will form the basis of the Training Committee’s Response to the Discussion Paper.

The researchers will continue to generate Papers and one of the most important will be a further Discussion Paper due out in July 2012. The Training Committee will track developments with that but CLLS members are recommended to visit the Review’s website (address above) to track progress for themselves.

Interested parties are able to register their contact details through the LETR website, allowing them to comment on documents and other items posted. Alternatively, anyone wishing to email the research team rather than use the website can contact them at letrbox@letr.org.uk.

If any CLLS member does send comments direct to the Review’s website, the Training Committee would be interested to know the views expressed. If members are willing to share their views, please send them by e-mail to the Chair of the Training Committee, Tony King at tony.king@ cliffordchance.com.

Inter-Livery Swimathon

The City of London Solicitors’ Company took part in this year’s Inter-Livery Swimathon which was held on 12th March at The RAC Club at Woodcote Park in Epsom, in aid of the Lord Mayor’s Appeal.

The Team Captain, Tony Baumgartner of Clyde & Co (pictured right), led the rest of the CLSC team in valiantly completing a distance of 5000 metres, despite being one team member short. Other team members (pictured) included, Richard Stanbrooke (Ashurst LLP), Emma Farrow (Skadden Arps LLP) and Jemma Thomas (Rosling King LLP).
