LEEDS, YORK AND NORTH YORKSHIRE CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE & INDUSTRY
Special Interest Groups Leeds Media
Leeds Media is the specialist media division of the Leeds, York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce.
It represents and supports a wide range of sectors within the digital, creative and communications industry, including traditional media, such as newspapers, television, radio and print. Also agencies or consultancies in marketing, PR, advertising, photography, event management, graphic design, web design and software development.
By working with a number of key partners, Leeds Media aims to raise the profile of the media, digital and creative industry in Leeds and the City Region, as well as encourage growth and economic prosperity within the sector. By organising regular socials, briefings, roundtables and special events, Leeds Media keeps its members connected and in the know.
Sector Support
As well as a host of benefits already available through our standard packages the Chamber also works closely with different industries to ensure members receive bespoke business support dependent on their sector.
Our relationships and partnerships with key organisations and specific trade bodies in a variety of sectors has enabled us to formulate services relevant to businesses in the manufacturing, media/digital/creative and property sectors.
This includes focus groups to discuss industry related issues and best practice, events, training seminars, mentoring and apprenticeships.
In addition the Chamber helps bring local businesses from a cross section of industries together, acting as an intermediary between the two – providing members with new and relevant contacts.
The key sectors we are continuing to develop are:
• Manufacturing • Media, digital and creative • Property and construction • Retail • Financial services • Professional services • Tourism and Leisure • IT and Telecommunications
The Chamber through Leeds Media has recently worked on some interesting projects as outlined here:
Retaining talent
Leeds Media ran a series of events highlighting the need to help retain the best talent for our region’s creative sector. The Media Placement Panel, for example, discussed the issue of intern and student placements with the senior management of some of the city’s highest regarded agencies including Brass, Numiko, Intermarketing, Ptarmigan Bell Pottinger, Thompson Brand Partners and Twentysix Digital. The event took place because Leeds Media consultations revealed the concern that agencies expressed about students’ readiness for work. The event aimed to bridge the gap between students, universities and agencies by discussing the views of each party about students finding work within the wider region after graduation. Nick Ramshaw, Chairman of Leeds Media said: “By bringing potential employers together with the region’s universities and colleges and students looking to secure placements, we can help remove the barriers that are holding up the placement process. I believe placements are one of the best ways to create new permanent jobs, so it is in everyone’s interest to do what we can to help.” The need to retain raw talent is a view widely shared by the media digital and creative community yet reservations remain when opportunities arise to employ students. Leeds Media tries to encourage local businesses to help nurture the talent we have in Yorkshire, ensuring the best candidates remain within the region after university.
Engaging business
Leeds Media also holds regular round table events to discuss issues within the industry. One example of this was an event which aimed to engage local businesses with a view to discover what they look for when searching for a media agency. Some of the region’s top corporate businesses and agencies took part, including Leeds Building Society, Northern Ballet, Yorkshire County Cricket Club, WYG and Leeds Met. The agenda covered how and where companies deploy their marketing budgets, how to tackle the North/South divide and the best ways to encourage trading locally.
Leeds Media has seen that it can lend itself as a broker and point of contact for businesses in the creative and corporate community, helping to forge links between the two industries.
