nce again, signs of a European economic recovery – at one stage marching merrily along – seem to be


stumbling and faltering. Stretching from Greece to Spain, the outlook is dismal. But, on the face of things in our industry,


taking events like Europain and Anuga FoodTec as examples of where like-minded people have gathered, it is not all that bad. Admittedly there are some concerns and


there is some caution in the air but the shows were both highly active with business seemingly being made and some manufacturers getting excited when they could pout a ‘sold’ sign on display equipment. On the flipside, some ‘regulars’ were


missing and there were whispers of bankruptcy, takeovers and the like. But most people we spoke to either in


Paris or Cologne exuding an air of quiet confidence that 2012 will be better than 2011.

We all certainly hope so. Perhaps the


turnout and mood at iba in Munich late September will be the clincher. Meanwhile business continues;


innovations are being made, the consumer is getting fussier, energy costs are rising and equipment and ingredients need to be tip- top to ensure the end product is too. To this end, there are a variety of features,


news stories and ‘expert views’ in this issue which will show that the doom and gloom is not, necessarily, so gloomy or doom-laden. Companies that are doing well are


shouting about it – whether this be in their presence at trade shows or through advertising in various media. And, like everyone out there, we hope


Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal and others – even the Eurozone itself – survive and emerge marching with more confidence as 2012 unfolds. Let’s look on the bright side of life, shall
