Maidstone Borough Council

Dave Gray is known as Daddy Gray because he has been working ‘on the bins’ for such a long time and his son drives a recycling truck.

David Gray has been a refuse collector for more than 30 years.

5 keys things he does: - Empties bins - Drives the dustcart

- Checks the safety of vehicle and crew

- Offers help and advice to residents

- Always has dog biscuits in his pocket to feed any friendly dogs!

Why do you like your job?

I like working in the open air and meeting the public, they are always very friendly and polite on my round. What does good customer service mean to you?

Being polite to the public and keeping an eye out for the vulnerable and helping them when possible, like getting their bin if they can’t manage it themselves.

My brother-in-law recommended the job over 30 years ago and I’ve been here every since.

Some facts about our refuse collections: - There are 70 refuse collectors.

- There are 7.5 million collections of refuse, recycling, food and garden waste every year.

- There are five refuse trucks, five recycling trucks, seven food waste vehicles, three garden trucks, a bulk bin vehicle, bulky collection vehicle, clinical van and narrow access split-bodied vehicle.

- The refuse collections take place between Monday and Thursday 6.45am to 3.45pm and Friday 6.45am to 2.45pm. In the summer garden crews can work from 6.45am until 5.45pm to get the work done!
