ANALYSISANAL SIS 911 — What Is Your Emergency? A fatal bus crash, the driver and one child are confirmed dead, two were critically injured and 10 By Cheri Clymer
received non-life threatening injuries; a shooter at a local high school requires an emergency evacuation of 1,200 students right before the afternoon route time; radio communications at the transportation center crash during a severe winter storm; a tornado rips through a neighboring town, causing buses on field trips to seek shelter; a weather warning confirms your center is in the tornado’s path. Being prepared to respond to an emergency is everyone’s responsibility. You can empower your
staff and employees to react with professionalism and composure by exercising or practicing your plan. Let’s get started by pulling that plan from the shelf, dusting it off and evaluating the effective- ness of the contents. To begin, get to know and include your community partners in the exercising process. Establish
an exercise team including individuals from the Office of Emergency Management, the fire depart- ment, police departments and emergency medical services. Teir knowledge and experience can be invaluable in determining how or what you want to test. Let’s discuss the different types of exercises and how they might impact your transportation
department. Tere are seven types of exercises, each of which is either discussion based or opera- tions based. Discussion-based exercises familiarize participants with current plans, policies, agreements and
procedures, or may be used to develop new plans, policies, agreements and procedures. Examples include seminars, workshops, tabletops and games.
