Te AMERICAN Society
President’s Message
Welcome! We hope you will enjoy this special American Hanoverian Society section in Warmbloods Today.
T
he American Hanoverian Society, Inc. (AHS) is an independent non-profit organization of active breeders, owners and friends of the Hanoverian with a 34 year
history in the United States, and the only organization in the U.S. authorized by the Hannoveraner Verband (HV), the German Hanoverian breeding association. Te AHS is internationally recognized and is a member studbook of the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses. Te AHS was founded for the promotion and preservation of the warmblooded Hanoverian horse on the North American continent; to maintain a public registry of Hanoverian horses; to brand approved foals with the society’s registered brand; to disseminate information to breeders, owners and friends pertaining to the breeding and raising of Hanoverian horses; to promote the performance of the Hanoverian horse in dressage, eventing, hunters, jumping and driving; and generally to do all things appropriate to encourage a public understanding of the Hanoverian horse, its breeding and performance. By agreement with the Verband, the AHS and HV have
established full reciprocity between their breeding programs. Tis means that Hanoverian horses registered, licensed and approved by the AHS in this country are accepted as such in Germany by the HV and vice versa. Te breeding rules and standards of the AHS are consistent with those of the HV. As a membership benefit, the AHS publishes an excellent
quarterly magazine and an annual Stallion Directory which, in 2012, features 107 fully-approved stallions. We also offer a number of special initiatives such as the North American Hanoverian Jumper Breeding Program (JBP) and our innovative Hanoverian Training Identification Program. Te AHS central office is based at the Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington, Kentucky, where friendly AHS employees stand by daily to answer your Hanoverian-related questions by phone, email or in person. Hugh Bellis-Jones, AHS Executive Director for 17 years, together with our Registrar Sandy Clevenger will have the right
Hanoverian
answer for just about any AHS-related question. One of our society’s most important functions is the annual
inspection tour during which our judges visit approximately 30 sites throughout the country to inspect stallions and mares for entry into the breeding program, conduct Mare Performance Tests, and register and brand eligible foals. We use these venues as an opportunity to educate participants and spectators. Each year many non-Hanoverian Warmblood mares and Toroughbred mares are inspected for inclusion in the Hanoverian books. Tose that are accepted as AHS-approved mares are eligible to produce Hanoverian registered foals. We invite you to check the schedule on our website in the spring and join the fun at a site nearby. Tis year, for the first time, there will be a Yearling and Two-Year-Old Futurity at the inspection sites with $3,000 in prize money. In 2012, our annual web-based Stallion Service Auction has
attracted over 60 participating stallions. Now in its 19th year, this event always generates much activity and offers an opportunity to purchase a great breeding at a discounted price while at the same time supporting the promotional activities of the AHS. Each year in January or February, members get together for an
annual meeting which includes an awards banquet, educational seminars, official membership meeting and open committee meetings. Tis affords an excellent opportunity to connect, to become up to date and to have fun with fellow Hanoverian breeders and enthusiasts. Tis year’s recently concluded event was held in West Palm Beach, Florida. Te expansive AHS awards program alone would be a great reason to be a member as we give out countless awards, plaques, perpetual trophies and coolers to high-ranking Hanoverians in many disciplines. Please check out our website
www.hanoverian.org for more information, add yourself to our mailing list or give our office a call. We look forward to hearing from you! v
