“It’s like the feelings I had for this horse as a foal have
come full circle,” says Mo. “Everything was about a feeling with this horse. Even when it didn’t make sense financially, I went with my gut, and it’s great to see how it has all worked out.”
WT Ca-Pow! Wild Turkey Farm is a world class facility located on 215
acres in Wilsonville, Oregon. The facility is owned and run by native Californian Barb Ellison. Barb first established Wild Turkey Farm in the late 1980s, but she didn’t really develop a personal interest in breeding until the acquisition of the Holsteiner stallion Liocalyon in 1996. She estimates she’s produced around thirty foals. She has increased production, however, and is expecting twelve foals in 2012. Her favorite homebred is a young Holsteiner stallion
named WT Ca-Pow! born in 2009. Ca-Pow is by the light bay 2001 Holsteiner stallion Chesapeake (by Carvallo) who is part of Wild Turkey Farm’s stallion line up. Ca-Pow’s dam is an imported Holsteiner mare named Ultima V, by Calato. Ultima V was purchased from Stall Hell in Germany in 2007. Barb says the decision to breed Ultima V to Chesapeake
was easy. “I loved Chesapeake, and I really liked Ultima, and the two were very complimentary,” she recalls. She felt
Ca-Pow was special from the moment he was born. “I liked his attitude right away, he was so curious about everything,” remarks Barb. “He was a bright bay with a lot of white—white on his legs, a white belly spot and very unique white markings on his face, which helped us come up with the name Ca-Pow!” As a two-year-old, Ca-Pow
was turned out with other two- year-old geldings in a small group. “I would sit and watch the two- year-olds out together, and my eye was always drawn to him, there is something about him,” says Barb. “My trainer likes him also. He says he has a huge stride and floats across the ground. I think he’s going to be a really good competitor.” Ca-Pow is currently being started under saddle. “The reports are good, and the trainer seems excited.” The next step will be to present Ca-Pow to the AHHA
(American Holsteiner Horse Association) this fall for preliminary stallion inspection. “After that, I will have a lot to think about,” says Barb. “I’m very over-protective of my horses, and I’m not sure about sending them away for the 70 Day Stallion Test. We’ll have to wait and see, but I’m very excited about him.”
