throughout the world for its fiddle traditions, but this music didn’t exist in a vacuum. It is firmly rooted in the social life of the various communities and part of a strong dance tradition. We took the opportunity of a visit to the 24th Shetland Accordion & Fiddle Festival to get to grips with the music making of these islands. Most people in Scotland will never have ventured to Shetland, far fewer from the rest of the UK. It really is another world; a world which once experienced tends to draw you back again and again.
