MAP OF THE NORTHERN SKY CONSTELLATIONS AND THE IRISH ROUND TOWERS Callahan made his discovery while studying an Irish Heritage pamphlet on the round towers. ‘I was lying on a couch looking at the map. There was something very familiar about it. After about five minutes it suddenly flashed into my mind – insight I believe it is called – exactly why the map appeared so familiar. The towers formed a star map of the northern night sky. I have used that sky map dozens and dozens of times hiking around in the deserts of the world. of Ireland was Armagh whose tower was built exactly at the ecliptic centre, showing that the builders knew not only that the Earth was round but about the precession of the equinoxes. Early Celtic Christians would have had detailed knowledge of the stars as many of them were Druids and many of the round towers were built at monasteries, originally Druid or Bard schools. BUT WHY ELSE WERE THE TOWERS BUILT? The Celts were a practical people, and to undertake this huge effort just to demonstrate an esoteric knowledge seems unlikely. Professor Callahan has suggested that the towers may have acted as stone antennae to collect energy from the sun, thus energising the soil to increase fertility and promoting an environment conducive to meditation and healing. With their star-map configuration, perhaps they were designed to channel energy
from the stars as well? One of the most controversial questions concerning these towers is the high placement of the doors, with varying amounts of infill inside the towers up to door level. The monks used ladders to access the entrance. Historians who have attempted an explanation for the high-set doors have cited the need for defence, but round towers are not large enough to withstand a siege. If the towers are viewed as antennae, then the infill can be seen as a way the monks could fine- tune the tower to assure sharp resonance. That the monks could detect this energy seems incredible, but all they were doing was tuning in to nature and using their bodies as antennae to feel the energy.
