old town mexican cafe
OLD TOWN Naturally the place to start, this is where you’ll
find the obvious iconic favorites where the whole of Southern California comes to gorge on the goods. Growing up, I always looked forward to visiting “Mexican Disneyland” and its unpaved, historically- fueled fun. Now that tequila is on my radar, there’s a whole new level of enjoyment to be relished.

While Old Town Mexican Café boasts a home-
made tortilla operation and a kitschy, party-fueled, tourist-trap atmosphere with great specials like $2 tacos and $2.50 margaritas on “Taco Tuesdays,” Casa Guadalajara offers a slightly more refined dining experience with finer touches on food preparation, a more luxurious backdrop and mariachi players strolling about the hacienda-style courtyards. Even host your professional banquets here for an added splash to your seminar that no one will forget!
MEXIMUM EXPOSURE!
by david vera
ere at The Rage Monthly, we’re fans of forward-thinking—always eager to pon- der the possibilities ahead… usually toward the closest approaching annual celebration. That’s why we’re planning our party schedule in advance, dying to rip the April page off our calendars to expose the gut-busting fiesta that kicks
spring into full force every year: Cinco de Mayo. Admit it, there’s a part of you that goes wild once the April showers are over and we’re beckoned by nature to relax more and wear less. Along with this ambient sense of joviality comes the inevitable search for the perfect Mexican meal. The Battle of Puebla was a tide- turning victory for Mexico, and as much as I love my foo-foo-French favorites, I will always fall for the natural partiality to a solid “cena Mexicana.” And no, I don’t mean the Styrofoam- clamshell-and-plastic-cutlery variety! We as San Diegans have the right to a cozy booth, a pitcher of frosty Margarita love and a plentiful heap of home-cooked familiarity served on a stifling platter the size of a surf board! Having searched high and low, from within and far outside our immediate community, here are our picks for the TOP TWO south-of-the-border bistros in each area that deliver the finest examples of Mexicuisine. …did you really think we could pick just one?
