DREAM INCUBATION DATES back to Egypt, Greece and Rome, 3000BC. It is a traditional way to deliberately induce the natural world of a dream. In the ancient days one spent the night in a sacred temple. People would come to get answers to problems, to be healed and for guidance. The person would pose the question or problem before retiring and the priests would interpret the meaning of their dream in the morning. We have learned to program or incubate
our own dreams and how to interpret them. With simple and effective techniques we can also get results. Dreams come either spontaneously or
through programming yourself to dream. When we program ourselves to dream it is referred to as creative incubation. This is where you ask for guidance, answers or clarity on a particular theme. You can go within to your dreams for
guidance and assistance. In all probability you will get the guidance you need, if not the first night, then within a short time. With all inner dream work, intention,
not ritual, is what matters.
HOW TO INCUBATE A DREAM: • State what you intend to find out or request help with in a positive and clear manner. For instance tell yourself: “Help me to understand my dream.” “Should I change jobs?” “What do I need to resolve about a certain issue?”
• Write down the question or request. Think about it during the day and, when you retire, state it clearly.
• Remind yourself to remember the dream. When you first awaken, record the dream. Be alert for any interesting or striking and unforeseen events that may have similarity to the question or request.

Van Eeden first coined the term ‘lucid dreaming’ in 1913. Lucid dreams are where you have conscious (thinking) awareness that you are dreaming and you control the content and sometimes sequence of your dreams. Some people levitate and fly in their lucid dreams. Lucidity is to manipulate dream
energies during the dream state in the direction of our desires, to steer the dream with a conscious reaction during the dream and retain awareness during the dream without awakening. During lucid dream state we may be able to access all memories and thought processes of our waking life. It may feel no different from being awake other than knowing you are asleep.
BECOMING A LUCID DREAMER Carlos Castaneda, a Peruvian born anthropologist, claimed to have an old Yaqui Indian guru and guide named Don Juan Matus. Don Juan took him as his apprentice in sorcery and magic. He delved into dreams and how to have lucid dreams. One method he used to recognise if he was dreaming or not was to ask the question “Am I dreaming?” as he looked at his hand. When we are dreaming, we become
carried away in the dream and don’t realise we are dreaming. It takes practice to develop the ability to train yourself to break through the dream state. Get into a habit of checking with
yourself during the awake state by asking yourself, “Is this a dream?” Do this with regularity and it will flow in to the dream state, where you will also ask yourself “Is this a dream?”
As you ask that question, look at your
hand. If it looks normal then you are awake, if it appears disfigured or odd, you are probably in the dream state. Note: If you begin to feel yourself
returning to the awake state; start to spin your dream self upwards. This will normally take you back to the lucid dream state. There is a Malaysian tribe called the
Senoi, who are taught from childhood how to control individual factors in their lucid dreams to have beneficial outcomes. By consciously managing lucid dreams, they get positive results in their real waking world and handle their daily challenges easier.
MASTERING LUCID DREAMS When you are lucid dreaming, you can take control of the dream. Helpful tips to handle the following types of dreams will allow you to become a master of lucid dreaming. Remember you cannot be physically
hurt or killed in a dream. It is an altered reality, an illusory world that symbolises our real world. In chase dreams you can decide to turn
around and confront whatever is chasing you. This is often the solution. It sometimes changes as we confront it. In disaster dreams, you could decide to control the upheaval and find the opportunities and solutions. In recurring dreams you can tell
yourself you are going to seek out the message and let it transform. It is like the movie ‘Ground Hog Day’. Once he decided to make progressive positive changes, he broke the recurring déjà vu dream, and positive outcomes and solutions happened. If you are naked and uncomfortable,
you can ask yourself what you need to know or change, and then make the alterations. In lucid dreaming you are more than
