CORONADO HOME TOUR

(Continued from page 1)

developing real estate for sale in Coronado. In all, between 1909 and 1911, F.C. Winchester developed more than 17 homes in Coronado that still exist, most on opposite sides of the same block (B and C avenues between 7th

streets), thus “the

Winchester legacy” was established. All of the homes he commissioned were Craftsman in design. Multi-paned windows and low-pitched gabled roof lines over the porches on these homes are so distinctive even a novice is able to pick out Winchester originals today. Only one featured home on this year’s tour is not a Craftsman bungalow associated with Winchester. In the same neighborhood, but dated much earlier, is one of the oldest residences in Coronado, built in 1896. Designed in a folk-Victorian style evocative of the Hotel Del Coronado with an identical railing pattern, its distinctive roof rafters are curved into a hook shape that originally supported a copper gutter. Gazing at the façade of this home from the sidewalk transports you back to a time when automobiles were still a novelty on the island.

F.C. Winchester and his wife, Mary, also acquired a boarding house built in 1906, which was originally named the “Grey Court”. Today this beautifully restored “1906 Lodge,” at 1060 Adella Avenue, operates as a posh bed and breakfast and is the starting point for Coronado’s Historic Home Tour on May 2nd

.

Historic Home Tour tickets will be sold and advance tickets picked up there the day of the tour until 1:30 p.m. (or from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Coronado Museum of History & Art, 1100 Orange Avenue). With tickets, participants will be invited into the Lodge to view the restored parlor and dining room, three “period” guest rooms (including one called the Winchester Room, featuring historic photos and other family memorabilia), and the courtyard before walking to the other homes on the tour. Please note: there will be no entry to the 1906 Lodge after 1:30 p.m.
