Broadband boost Continued from page one

to nearby Yalding and four other parishes in Kent. However, undeterred, a group of businesses set about raising the funds needed to finance their own private scheme. Elizabeth Corfe, who co-ordinated

the project with Call Flow Solutions of East Peckham, said: “I couldn’t believe we were only 30 miles from London yet had such an incredibly bad service. Rural businesses and those people who work from home have the greatest problems.” The Corfes had been struggling to

find tenants for their business and commercial units because of the slow broadband speeds. Together with three other local business people, they drew up a simple legal agreement whereby they will recover their investment over a four-year period. Call Flow deliver a solution broadly similar to BT Infinity, termed ‘Sub Loop Unbundling’ (SLU) which means they put the broadband equipment in their local street cabinet, usually next to the BT cabinet, rather than the distant tele- phone exchange. Bringing the broadband equipment closer to the community delivers much faster connection speeds. The West Peckham solution was

the first in the UK to have benefited from a new Ofcom-mandated ‘BT infrastructure sharing’ process, whereby Call Flow deploy their ca- bles on BT poles and ducts.

Youth centre could be saved

THREATENED youth services in Snodland could continue in partnership with Holmesdale Technology College. A campaign was launched by

Tonbridge and Malling and Snodland councils and MP Tracey Crouch to save Samays youth club from closure under KCC’s review of services. The centre, based at Holmes-

dale, faced being replaced by a “youth hub” 15 miles away in Tonbridge – an ideawhich Miss Crouch described as short- sighted.

However, borough council-

lors heard KCC now recognised the importance of Snodland youth services and was, there- fore, “seeking to secure a long term offer in this location, po- tentially in partnership with Holmesdale School.”
