The story of our café… This is the story of how we have created (almost!) a community arts café at The St. James Centre. It is a very exciting part of a longer story; “how we managed to acquire the old school buildings to create the entire centre”!

Setting the scene...

The St. James Centre Trust and The Beat Project had formed a partnership in 2009 to work together in seeking all funding, help, resources and ideas to bring the centre to life.

The St. James Centre Trust took over the old school buildings in January 2010. The trust had worked tirelessly to secure a lease for the building, the funding for the first stage conversion, the practical help needed and to attract others to make use of the centre once it was open. The Beat Project already had an established Community Development Coordinator in East Malling who has been involved in the project from the very outset, assisting the trust as a co-opted trustee with gathering of evidence that the centre was both required and desired, statistical information, assisting with funding applications and organising meetings to get all others involved. As the project progressed and the lease of the buildings had been secured, the role of The Beat Project became fund raising, strategic planning and managing the centre on a day to day basis on behalf of the trust.

This has included developing the much desired community café.

EAT – LEARN - ENJOY

The café is being developed in the area that was once the old school kitchens.

Before we moved into the centre the trust had arranged for all the old school cookers and other equipment to be removed from the kitchens. Some walls had to be removed to create our new café kitchen space and various other works undertaken. When we first moved in, the café area had no ceiling, no utilities connected, very old and draughty windows, damaged flooring and was basically a large, unsightly space.

However, we could all see the possibilities. The ideas were formed, a plan agreed and we began work immediately on getting all the quotes, designs and most importantly; the funding needed.

The café is almost complete, with a small stage area, plans for an arts workshop area, internet bar and the kitchen will have facility for training, work experience and volunteering opportunities.

The café logo and name were designed and chosen by local school children from St James the Great Primary and Nursery School.
