ixty teams from Squirts through Midgets competed in the 35th annual Presidents’ Day

Tournament in Colorado Springs, which ran from Feb. 17-20 at various area rinks. According to tournament director April

Timby, the showcase was another resounding success. “I heard nothing but positive things about

Colorado Springs, the people they dealt with, the restaurants, the hotels,” she said. “(All the partici- pating teams) want to come back next year.” Teams in Squirt A, B and C; Pee Wee AA, A

and B; Bantam AA, A and B; and Midget Minor AA and A divisions squared off over the course of the four-day showcase. Four Colorado teams took home championship

banners in their respective divisions, including the Boulder Hockey Club’s Pee Wee AA team, which finished in second place at both the Quebec Pee Wee International Tournament and its Silver Stick regional qualifiers this season. “Breaking through with a tournament win was

excellent,” said coach Sean O’Leary, whose team finished the Colorado Springs event with a 4-0-1 record. “The kids deserved it, and I’m glad they got to experience that feeling.” Stefan Fruhwirth rang up a team-high five

points on four goals for Boulder, andBrodie Wie- ner chipped in three assists. In goal,Casey Lind- holm backstopped the Bison to three victories. “I was very excited for the kids,” O’Leary added. “It was a great shot in the arm and confidence boost

Mexico, Texas, Idaho, Nebraska, Florida, Nevada and Colorado participated, as well as squads north of the border from Alberta and British Columbia. Timby noted that all monies raised by virtue of

for them, and it was a great team effort.” The Arapahoe Warriors won the Squirt B divi-

sion title. “It was great to see our players come together

and win as a team,” said coachMiles Steel, whose club forged a perfect 5-0 record. Bryce Bitsky led the Warriors’ offensive charge

with nine points on six goals, whileNicolas Karst added four assists. Goaltender Evan Crawford earned three wins between the pipes. “It was also fun to see teams from outside of Colo-

rado,” added Steel. “What a great experience.” Arvada (Midget Minor A) and the Littleton

Hawks (Midget Minor AA) were the other Colorado champions. For Arvada (5-0), Landon Costley put home a

team-high nine points (five goals), and netminder Tanner Colborg picked up three wins. Littleton’s

Colorado Springs community - and to be a part of such a hockey-rich environment - is a win-win across the board. “The exposure this tournament helps generate for

our city is huge, too,” Timby said. Individual trophies were awarded to the first-

place winners, who also received championship T-shirts, and second-place teams. Third-place teams took home medals and all Squirt teams earned par- ticipation medals. The other division winners included: Washing-

ton’s Kent Valley (Bantam A); Vancouver, British Columbia’s Storm (Bantam AA); the San Diego Ice Arena Oilers (Bantam B); Montana’s Thunderblades (Pee Wee A); Crested Butte, also from Montana (Pee Wee B); and the Huskies from British Columbia (Squirt A).
