FROM THE EDITOR: ECHL All-Star Game coming to Colorado

T

he best of the best in the ECHL will head to Loveland next year as the Colorado Eagles will

host the league’s annual all-star game on Wednes- day, Jan. 23, 2013 at the Budweiser Events Center. “Being able to host one of the league’s biggest

events is an honor and we’re looking forward to put- ting on a great game,” said Eagles presidentChris Stewart. “We hope to draw from our previous expe- rience hosting an all-star game and will make this one even bigger and better - something the league and all of its members will be proud to participate in.”

Matt Mackinder When the Eagles hosted the Central Hockey

League All-Star Game in 2009, they helped in- troduce a format that has since been adopted by

several other leagues - including the ECHL - in which the host team takes on a squad comprised of all-stars from the rest of the league’s clubs. The 2013 edition will follow the same format. More information on the league’s all-star festivities will be announced over the

summer. The Colorado Thunderbirds flexed even more developmental muscle recently,

as 16U AAA forwardDylan Gambrell announced his commitment to the Uni- versity of Denver. “We’re extremely excited for Dylan,” Thunderbirds 16U coach and director of

hockey operationsAngelo Ricci said of the 1996 birth year from Bonney Lake, Wash. “He’ll be a wonderful addition to the Pioneers program.” Gambrell, along with 16U forwardDominic Turgeon and defenseman

Brandon Carlo, were invited to attend the U.S. National Team Development Program’s 40-man camp, which will run from March 19-23 in Ann Arbor, Mich. Having recently signed with the Portland (Ore.) Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League (Major Junior), Turgeon will not attend the camp. What’s more, the 16U team won Tier I Elite League championship this season

with a record of 32-2-6. Widely considered the top Midget circuit in the country, the Elite League is comprised of 24 of the top AAA programs across the U.S.

Another day, another college commitment for the Colorado Select 19U AAA

squad as forward Sarah Nelson has decided to attend and play hockey at Divi- sion III SUNY-Potsdam (N.Y.) this fall. Nelson, a senior at Highland Ranch’s Mountain Vista High School, has an am-

bitious four years planned at Potsdam (ECAC West). She will major in Business and minor in Sports Medicine with a goal of starting a training facility geared towards athletes who want to excel in their sport. She’s the fifth player from this year’s 19U Select team to commit to an NCAA

program. Two 22-year-old Berthoud natives - forwardNikko Landeros and defense-

man Tyler Carron - will compete in the upcoming International Paralympic Committee Sledge Hockey World Championship, which will be held from March 25-April 1 in Hamar, Norway. Bilateral amputees after being injured by a car while helping each other

change a tire as juniors in high school, Carron and Landeros play for the Colo- rado Avalanche sled club team.

Congratulations to all of this year’s Colorado Amateur Hockey Association

state champions. Following the Littleton Hawks’ Midget Major and Midget Minor teams win-

ning the Tier II titles in December, the Colorado Rampage (Midget Major) and Colorado Thunderbirds (Midget Minor and Bantam) took home the Tier I cham- pionships last month. The Colorado Select program won the 19U AA girls state title, while the

Mountain States Rock Stars won the 16U AA championship. The Bantam and Pee Wee Tier II state champions were crowned on March 11.
