Hunter Paces Added to Conditions Book

New Foxhall Divisions

T e Foxhall Farm Cup Team Chase is an inter-hunt team chase competition in which all foxhunters are invited to participate. T e Foxhall is similar to a hunter pace. T e titled Foxhall division features high fences and fast times, but the Full Cry Cup is styled more in the hunter pace fashion, with the winning team having the time that comes closest to the aver- age time of all rides over the course. T e three and ¼ mile course meanders through the heart of Green Spring Valley Hounds territory and includes 25 fences, most of which are about 3’3” high or less, with the largest at 3’6” (although there are two optional jumps that are bigger: a 3’9” post and rail and a 4’ round bale jump). Conditions this year have been amended to allow schools to fi eld a team for the Full Cry Trophy, and by establishing a junior and a se- nior division for the Full Cry.

New Timber Course for Green Spring All last summer and into the fall, they worked

on it, chewing on ideas, looking at the lay of the land, walking options. Responding to appeals to incorporate more of the Shawan Downs property and to improve the training aspect for spring timber prospects, James Stierhoff , Mike Hankin, Alix Smith, Michael Wharton, Charlie Fenwick, Jr., Charlie Fenwick III, and several others met repeatedly to design a new timber course. T e new course, which utilizes much of Shawan’s 300 acres, includes post and rail, log and stacked fences and follows a clas- sic timber layout. With the variety of fences and the varying terrain, organizers believe that the course will be more challenging-–and thus more appealing—for both green and experi- enced horses as they train for the timber season, and will help increase their fi tness levels.

Still No Roedown

For the second year in a row, the Marlbor- ough Hunt Races at Roedown Farm in David- sonville have been canceled. After owner Hal C. B. Clagett died, the property was sold to Elizabeth and Marko Bulmer, who had hoped

to be able to continue to host the race. It was canceled in 2011 due to the transfer of property ownership. T is year, the owners, who are in the process of restoring and repairing the farm, felt there was still too much to be done before the scheduled April 1 race day. T us, the race was canceled again. Race committee chairman Christy Clagett has stated that Marlborough Hunt Club offi - cials are looking into alternative sites for 2013 and beyond.

Hunt Cup Incentives

T e Maryland Hunt Cup Association an- nounced in January an early nomination process that could save owners hundreds of dollars when entering the 116th running of the Maryland Hunt Cup (scheduled for April 28). Horses nominated by March 13 will pay a nomination fee of only $25. T ose that apply after that date will pay a supplemental fee of $500. T e change is to encourage owners to apply early so that rac- ing fans can follow the Hunt Cup horses during the early part of the spring season.
