A limited edition print, from an original oil by Washington, D.C., artist Brenda Gordon, depicting the centennial celebration race featured at the 1998 Grand National for retired jockeys who previously ridden in the Grand National. $75, or $52.50 if purchased via marylandsteeplechasing.com

Founded in 1898 by several young men who were too young to enter in the Maryland Hunt Cup, the Grand National quickly became a standard in Maryland timber racing. If the Hunt Cup is the most demanding timber race (4 miles, 22 fences), the Grand National is the most demanding 3 mile timber race (18 fences. Since the race moved to the current course in 1946, 16 horses have won both races, while 15 horses which have won the Hunt Cup were unable to win the Grand National. Only 6 have won the race 3 or more times: Inshore, Winton, Landing Party, Buck Jakes, Welter Weight (4 wins) and Mountain Dew, a 6 time winner and still reigning king of the Grand National, with 8 starts, six wins, 2 seconds and never a fall over 144 fences, beating horses that had won or would win the Hunt Cup.
