when Chip was still a boy. After war service in the Royal Navy, serving mainly on Russian convoys, he took a history degree at Oxford and travelled in Canada. His teaching qualificationwas earned in Canada before he returned to the UK, living in Dorset before settling locally. With wife of over 55 years,
Ruth, Chip raised sons Paul and Mark. Paul Melly said: “My fa- ther was a real humanitarian and a very caring man who loved wildlife and the countryside and knew the unspoilt areas around Bearsted very well. “He served as warden atOtham Church for many years and was known as someone comfortable with being informal. He wasn’t a great lover of being involved in ceremonial occasions but did take a real interest in human rights and helped people both lo- cally and globally.” Chip had coached rugby and cricket at Maidstone Grammar School. He leaves his wife, sons, and grandsons Matthew,Guyand Charlie.
PeterWaghorn PETERWaghorn (57), who lived in Ringlestone Crescent, Maid- stone, for 35 years, spent most of his working life as a mechanic working for KCC in Aylesford, servicing and repairing light ve- hicles.

after marriage to wife Denise, who said: “Peter was a real out- doors man, he loved shooting which he did all round the local area and fishing, especially for trout. Tilly Boxall TILLY Boxall (90) lived for 50 years in Yeoman Way, Bearsted. She moved to Penenden Heath and then back to Bearsted. She had also lived in the Weald of Kent.
Born in
Wales, she met husband of over 60 years, Ted, when the pair worked in a munitions factory atBrid- gend in Wales during the war. They raised children Brian, John, Margaret, Robert and Jan- ice. Ted worked as a mechanic at Rootes garage in Maidstone and Tilly did some part-timework lo- cally, including at the Sainsbury’s store in The Mall (then known as the Stoneborough Centre). Granddaughter Claire said: “My grandmother was a staunch member of Bearsted WI and made jam and cakes. She loved gardening and was always very happy and smiley. “She was proud of her family
and they went to see her when she performed with the Chande- liers, a drama group in Maid- stone. She was on stage singing and dancing.” Tilly, who was widowed in 2005, leaves her children, 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Dave Lee DAVELee (64) ofHerne had a na- tional reputation as a comedian, after-dinner speaker and enter- tainer. He was well-known in and around Maidstone through his regular commentary and MC work at Lashings Cricket Club. His regular panto appearances at theMarlowe Theatre, Canterbury, drew audiencemembers from the Maidstone area and Lee’s charity – Dave Lee’s Happy Holidays – helped local people.

£2m for sick and disabled chil- dren since Dave founded it in 1993 and his efforts in this area were rewarded with an MBE in 2003. He was diagnosed with pancre- atic cancer shortly before the scheduled opening of Cinderella at the Marlowe Theatre. His casting as Baron Hardup in the produc- tion marked the 17th time he had been involved with the annual panto at that venue. Dave began his career as a drummer and singer. His work included records, warm up work for television shows, his own “Fat Bloke Show” on radio and leading a comedy show band. Lashings’ website has praised his quick wits and ability to produce a comedy “one-liner for every possible occasion”.
Rose Reynolds ROSE Reynolds (58) who lived for her final 15 years in Lenside Drive, Bearsted, spent her life in the Maidstone area. Prior to Lenside Drive she lived on Willington Street.

King was born and worked locally, start- ing at KCC’s Springfield site and going on to work in retail and service outlets in Maidstone. Her jobs included time with Greggs and Court’s Furnishings inWeek Street. In recent years she worked at
Boots in The Mall, starting in their staff canteen and earning qualifications that helped her get promotion to the pharmacy. Through marriages she was known as Rose Perkins and Rose Skinner before marrying partner of over two years, Mick Reynolds, in September 2011. Rose was mother to Adrian, Gra- ham and Charlene. Mick Reynolds said: “Rose was very
out-going and loved life, she was the life andsoul of the party. “She was very friendly and able to get on well with people where she worked. She lived for her fam- ily.”
Rose had treatment for breast cancer six years ago and had a heart condition – cardiomyopa- thy – that she managed through medication and regular checks. She leaves her husband, chil-
dren and grandchildren James, Ellie, Joshua and Luke.
Evelyn Bishop EVELYN Bishop (85) lived on Queens Road, Barming, for over 60 years. This was the second home she lived in with husband of 66 years, Martyn. The couple previously lived in Shepway. Locally born as Evelyn King,
she worked in munitions during the war, and also as a canning factory worker and in the print works in Hart Street. Evelyn was mother to Deborah
and Gary. Deb- orah said: “Mum’s life was Dad and the family, she was always happy and try- ing to give us things. When my parents re- tired they spent all their time to- gether. “Mum liked going out in the
car, walking and looking after an- imals. She enjoyed old films on television.” Evelyn, who was widowed six months ago, leaves her children, grandchildren Simon, Sadie, Shaun, Candice and Jack, great-grandchildren Karly, Laura, Ricky, Esme and Ollie and great-great grandchil- dren Nell and Jake.
