Clampdown on ‘YouTube’ yobs
POLICE have launched a crackdown on yobswho have been dam- aging a conservation area at Snodland with motorbikes and 4x4s and posting videos on YouTube. Woodland at Holly Hill has been suffering from nuisance vehi-
cles allwinter. The offenders even used cameras on their crash hel- mets to film their dangerous exploits and then bragged about them on the internet. A special unit from Kent Police teamed up withwoodland war-
dens in a two-day operation in which 14 warnings were given to people found driving on the land in an anti-social way. If caught a second time, these vehicles will be seized. Six fines were also issued for vehicles driving elsewhere than on a road and one vehicle was seized as the driver had no licence. An- other driver was fined £200 for hav- ing no insurance. PC Tony Green
from Kent Police’s motorcycle team said: “The actions of these individuals are just another form of mindless vandalism. “The potential damage to the environment caused by bikes and
Nuisance riders who are vandalising Holly Hill, Snodland, could have their vehicles seized by police
cars in this area is vast, as it is a special conservation area and also a site of special scientific interest. “We have seen evidence of rare plants and trees being damaged
and uprooted deliberately to access the protected areas in vehicles. “What compounded their actions though is that the culprits were
so blasé that they posted videos of their deeds on YouTube. “Motorbikes and 4x4s in this area will not be tolerated and those found driving here could have their vehicles seized permanently.”

Roof raiders’ £5,000 lead haul POLICE have appealed for information after metal thieves stole almost 50m of lead flashing from the roof of Larkfield Leisure Centre. The crime was reported in January after it was discovered the roof of
the centre had been leaking as a result of the theft, but it is thought that the lead could have been taken any time after Boxing Day. Themissing metal is thought to be worth around £5,000 and police are
keen for those who may have bought or who are offered large amounts of lead flashing for sale to come forward. Contact Kent Police on 101.
Hotel given go-ahead A NEW 100-bedroom Whitbread Premier Inn hotel has been given the green light for London Road, Maidstone. Maidstone Council’s planning committee praised the scheme to convert London House, an empty four-storey former borough council office building within the one-way system, into the hotel, which will also have 92 parking spaces – 39 less than previously. Committee member Cllr Clive English said: “It will continue to extend and maintain Maidstone’s tourist offer. It is very difficult to find hotel accommodation in Maidstone, particularly at the more reasonable end of the mar- ket.” The application was given unanimous backing.

Phone survey scam RESIDENTS have been warned by Tonbridge and Malling Council not to fall victim to a possible phone survey scam. People have contacted the
local authority to report that they have received a phone call in the evening from someone pretending to be a council offi- cer and asking them to com- plete a survey over the phone. The borough says it is not un- dertaking any phone surveys. Cllr Mark Rhodes said: “There
will always be people who use clever and persuasive tactics to obtain personal information. If you are in any doubt, check it out. It only takes a moment to call the council on 01732 844522 to verify a call or email.”
