IN MEMORIAM PETER CRIPPS, 1939- 2010
Pete grew up in Otford, the fourth in a family of seven children. HIs family lived in Hale Lane, and his father worked as a dairyman. He went to school locally and then did National Service. Having completed his compulsory two years, he continued in the Territorial Army until 1964.
In civilian life, Pete worked for the brick-making company, Redlands. He was in charge
of a sand dredger, excavating the sand from the quarry behind Browns Yard, between Otford and Sevenoaks. Whilst at work he had a bad accident, and sustained a serious injury to his leg. It took Pete a long time to recover, but after his convalescence he got a job with British Rail, working as a train guard, and then as a supervisor first at Sevenoaks Station and then at Waterloo. He continued with the railway for over ten years.
Pete got married to Heather in April 1961. They had three sons and two daughters.
Sadly, Heather developed cancer, and she died in 1974, aged just 32. Four years later, in 1978, Pete got married to Barbara, and they had another son. In the 1990s Pete moved to the West Country, but he returned to Kent after ten years because he wanted to be nearer his family members. Latterly he lived in Sevenoaks.
Pete enjoyed socialising the Woodman or the Crown pubs in Otford. He liked music,
particularly Country and Western. He also maintained an interest in native American Indian culture, collecting various objects and artefacts. Pete had long-standing links with Otford and he will be remembered as a good friend to many.
YVONNE DENNY, 1953-2010
Yvonne grew up in Orpington. After leaving school her first job was with Lloyds Bank. She then got a job with the Leo Burnett advertising agency as a wages clerk. She enjoyed meeting celebrities such as John Cleese. Her third job was with Bromley Borough Council, again as a wages clerk. She left this in 1981 to start a family.
Yvonne met her husband, Tony, in 1972 and they got married in 1975. After living in
Swanley for five years they came to Otford in 1980. They were familiar with the village through having come here for meals in the local pubs. The family lived at first in Willow Park. After ten years they moved to Tudor Crescent. Yvonne has two children, Andrew and Sarah, and one grand-daughter, Daisy.
Yvonne will be remembered by many from her job as a nursery assistant for three
mornings a week at the Ducklings Pre-School that met in the Church Hall. She continued this for 19 years. Yvonne took an active part in village life. She was a treasurer of the Scouts for many years and she regularly helped at the village summer fete.
Yvonne was first diagnosed with cancer in 2008, which after treatment went into remission, but returned earlier this year. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
