Work Place Hostility By DeAnne Rosenberg

Based on the book ‘Rage to Resolution’ this article places the HR professional at work in his/her office at a time when serious reorganization and down-sizing is taking place. A distraught, terminated employee enters and starts talking in an angry, threatening manner. What follows is a discussion of how to handle this situation on three levels:

Level one – the employee, although extremely upset – can be reasoned with by using specific verbal techniques targeted at problem-solving and moving forward.

Level Two – the employee is fearful and angry beyond reason. The HR person may be in danger. How to defuse the situation without attempting problem-solving.

Level Three – the employee enters the HR person’s office with a weapon looking for blood. The HR person is in great physical danger.

Examples of dialogue are presented to illustrate the various techniques. There is also some information on how the organization can protect its HR professionals from the hostility of terminated employees.

ANNOUNCEMENT G4S LoneProtector Selected by American Water to Protect Lone Workers

American Water - the largest publicly traded U.S. water utility company - has selected the LoneProtector solution from G4S to help protect its workers. See the release below and attached for more information.

A brief summary: Like all utilities, some of American Water's staff work independently in the field, leaving them more vulnerable to injury or other hazardous situations. American Water has chosen the LoneProtector solution to help keep its lone workers protected no matter where their work takes them. The LoneProtector solution includes a GPS communications device that doubles as a name tag. If the employee needs help, he can push a button on the device and the G4S monitoring center can send emergency services to his exact location. Further, an imbedded "man down" alert notifies the monitoring center of a fall or immobilization, enabling help to be sent even if the employee is unable to call for help.
