One Million UK Workers Have Experienced Violence In The Workplace
Bullying and violence in the workplace are more common to UK workers life than previously thought, according to research which suggests that a million Britons have experienced physical aggression in the workplace in the past two years, with millions more subjected to rudeness, intimidation and humiliation. The joint study by Cardiff and Plymouth universities concludes that conventional employers policies are failing to deal with ill treatment in the workplace. Surprisingly, managers and professionals in well-paid jobs are among those most prone to such abuse.
The research was based on face-to-face interviews with nearly 4,000 employees representing a cross-section of the British workforce. Results showed that almost one in 20 had suffered violence at work – equivalent to more than one million workers when translated nationally – with 3.8% injured as a result. Of those who reported suffering violence, 13% said assaults happened daily. Most of the attackers came from outside the workplace, with 72% of assailants being customers, clients or members of the public.

California now requires hospitals to conform to minimal security standards. The legislation requires hospital security and safety assessments to be conducted not less than annually, and requires hospital security plans to be updated annually, provides that hospital security plans may also include efforts to work with local police regarding violent acts at the facility, and requires hospitals to consult with affected employees and members of the medical staff in developing their security plans and assessments.

Homicides Accounted for 11 Percent of Workplace Fatalities in '09
Homicides account for 11 percent of workplace fatalities, most resulting from robberies rather than co-worker crimes of passion, NCCI Holdings Inc. said in a research brief released Jan. 23. Meanwhile, nonfatal assaults make up less than 2 percent of total nonfatal lost work- time injuries and illnesses, but that share has been increasing, NCCI says in "Violence in the Workplace," a research brief based on data collected through 2009, the

THE BULLY AT WORK
Whistleblowing, Workers’ Comp and Mobbing
Mobbing is an organizational dynamic. When mobbing and covert bullying are part of the organizational culture, they can be quietly used as retaliation for whistleblowing
and/or to move workers out of the workplace who have become perceived liabilities due to work injury. If you are appalled by this concept, you are not alone. However this does occur and deserves a closer look on the part of ethical human resources administrators and risk management professionals.
The Ethics Resource Center’s 2009 survey reported that fifteen percent of surveyed employees who reported misconduct experienced both subtle and overt behaviors which they construed as retaliatory. Some of the behaviors include the following:
60% other employees gave employee a cold shoulder
62% supervisor or management excluded person from decisions and work activity
55% verbally abused by direct supervisor or someone else in management
60% other employees gave employee a cold shoulder
The majority of these are included in the five categories of observable mobbing behaviors. While statistics are indicative of issues worthy of investigation, it may be helpful to look at some individual cases with which I have had experience within the past year.
