FOOD SAFETY SUPPLEMENT: FGL

are directly affected. Knowing these details will help prepare you for the future.

Top five areas of impact 1. Facility inspections Stringent regulations, harsh environmental conditions and rigorous plant operations are making it increasingly important to use appropriate food grade lubricants. Today, these products play a critical role to help preserve the quality, integrity and safety of consumer food and beverage products and have a variety of common uses in the food manufacturing industry. The importance of having these products evaluated by a third-party is becoming more evident because of the tremendous impact it will have when an organisation audits the facility. Using NSF Registered products shows evidence that a verification system is in place, and will reduce the time and effort spent showing an auditor the traceability and safety of these food grade lubricants. Someone can take all the precautions necessary when evaluating food ingredients as they enter a facility, but there is great risk associated with contaminating a product during the processing stage. To minimise this risk using lubricants that have been registered by a third party is a solution.

HACCP-based food safety programs place the responsibility on food processors to identify and control risks for food contamination. Thus, processors must couple the use of approved products, such as NSF Registered lubricants, with a well-designed lubricant maintenance plan. Is your company prepared for this audit?

2. Documentation and record keeping There is tremendous focus being placed on developing and maintaining stringent documentation for all materials sourced into the facility. Material Safety Data Sheets and Product Specification Sheets are just a couple of examples of the product documentation that will need to be validated in order to accept this as part of a facility’s overall quality system. The initial qualification of these products that are being brought in is a detailed and thorough process. The on-going maintenance of keeping accurate records moving forward is also a very important part and being able to provide access to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is something to keep in mind when you are organising this documentation. As products are produced and shipped to the end user, ensuring detailed documentation in the ship - ment to support the product use is essential.

3. Food safety plans FSMA also expands the jurisdiction of the FDA and increases penalties for companies that distribute harmful or unsafe products. Now it is more critical than ever for food facilities to effectively manage risks in their processes and supply chain. The best way to do this is through implementation of an effective HACCP plan. HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) is an approach that identifies where potential contamination can occur and strictly manages and monitors these areas, ensuring the process is in control and that the safest product possible is being produced. HACCP-based food safety programs place the responsibility on food processors to prevent rather than catch potential hazards. A key consideration in developing and maintaining an effective plan is products being brought into the facility to support the production of food.

4. Traceability In today’s world, knowing where a product came from can be a complex path to follow. Each person in the supply chain is responsible for maintaining records about the products they receive, their full intended use and they must know whom the product was sold or
