Pub can boogie –
but only until 10pm THE Bull Inn at Linton Hill has been allowed to extend its outdoor music licence by two hours to 10pm. Brewery owners Shepherd Neame had wanted Maid- stone’s licensing committee to allow an 11pm finish but this was refused after objec- tions from nearby residents. Any outdoor, live music
and dance events between 8pm and 10pm must be held in a marquee. Also, only 26 such events
can be held in a year, and no more than three in a month. Notices indicating pro-
posed after-8pm events must be displayed at the pub and on the village website at least 14 days in advance.
Solar approval AN application has been ac- cepted to install solar panels on an existing agricultural building in Amsbury Farm, East Street, Hunton. The applicant’s design state-
ment said: “The integrated 50kw PV system will provide upwards of 60% of the farm’s usage per annum. Given the location of the install, it was agreed to use a closemounted non-reflective use solar panel system, thereby reducing the impact it had on the sur- rounding area.”
Head teachers to leave two schools Plaque permission
News in brief
TWO of Maidstone’s leading headmasters have announced they are to quit their schools in the summer. Dr Nick Argent (57), head of Maidstone Grammar School for boys in Barton Road, is leaving his £82,000 per year post for per- sonal reasons, as is Richard Johnson (46), head of Sutton Valence Preparatory School, Chart Sutton. Dr Argent, who came to Maidstone from
the independent boys’ school, Elizabeth College, in Guernsey, has said his decision has nothing to do with the school but for “changes in his personal circumstances”. He is considering the possibility of retirement or consultancy
work. In a letter to parents, chairman of governors Lindsey Evans writes:
“I would like to thank Dr Argent for his efforts over the past three years.” In Chart Sutton, prep school headmaster Richard Johnson has also
given notice that he will leave in the summer. Mr Johnson (pictured), who attended the Royal family’s favourite Gordonstoun School near Elgin, joined Sutton Valence Prep School fromWiltshire, three years ago, where he still has family. Before moving to Kent, he was deputy headmaster of Pewsey School and is an experienced member of the Independent Schools Inspectorate. A spokesman for the prep school said: “The governors have recorded their gratitude to Mr Johnson for bringing a wealth of ex- perience to the school and for all he has done in his time here and send him, his wife Helen and their young son their best wishes.”
