agricultural history. Tey are able to visit a burdei (sod house) to see the first home of the earliest Ukrainian pioneers who began settling in this region 120 years ago. Visitors can go to the farmstead zone, a one-room school house, grocery store and hall in the rural community zone, and a fully-functioning grain elevator, blacksmith house, and other typical businesses in the town-site zone. Tere are also three churches of Eastern Byzantine Rite at the Ukrainian Village. “Te Village”, as it is colloquially

known, has a very strong commitment to historical authenticity and the concept of living history. Te Village uses a technique known as first-person interpretation which requires that the costumed performers remain in character at all times (or as much as is feasibly possible). Actors answer all questions as if it is the year their building portrays. Although this technique is off-putting for some visitors at first, it allows for a much stronger experience of immersion in history than traditional third-person interpretation where the actor acknowledges that he is, in fact, in a museum. Visit the Ukrainian Village on a

special event day to witness the rich tapestry of Ukrainian-Canadian art, culture and community! Tere is something for everyone at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, located 25 minutes, or 50 km (30 miles),

east of Edmonton on Highway 16. Te gate entrance is located 3 km (1.8 miles) east of Elk Island National Park. Te Ukrainian Cultural Heritage

Village is located 25 minutes or 50 km (30 miles) east of Edmonton along

Highway 16, just 3 km (1.8 miles) east of Elk Island National Park. Access is along a four-lane divided

highway and the travel route is well signed from both east and west directions.
