Stop, Look and Listen to Make the Connection
ost of us are just hoping and waiting for that “connection” with our horses, but how much actual effort are you putting into making it happen?
Stop and watch, I mean REALLY WATCH, your horse. Spend time in his presence. Do not ask a thing....just be together.
Take a walk with your friend around the pasture. See who you meet or visit along the way. Are ears back? Do bodies move away or approach nose-to-nose, softly and with fondness? Are steps brisk and playful or slow and deliberate?
Observe drinking habits. How often do you fill the trough? Keep a notebook or clipboard on hand for jotting down important details.
Look at your horse’s poop. Is it well formed, soft, hard, flaky, floppy?
Look into your horse’s eyes. Are they bright and clear or dull and strained? Beware, as your friend will look back. Will he see the REAL YOU or will he see who you pretend to be with him?
Listen, I mean REALLY LISTEN, at rest and at play, to the silence, to the chewing of hay or grass and at morning feed time. Do they gulp food or eat peacefully enjoying each unhurried bite? Listen to squeals and sighs and nickers and snorts and clear breath or labored breathing. Does your horse call to you each morning? Have you tried calling back? You won’t regret it; it can be the start of a daily exchange you will cherish while your friend is with you and a deafening silent reminder when he or she has moved on.
Each day will be filled with appreciation for every moment well spent
together...and through it all, not only will you connect with your horse, you will know yourself better, too.
