VANCOUVER ISLAND

Lake Cowichan C

owichan Lake is one of the jew- els of British Columbia. Its easy access, excellent fishing and recre- ational opportunities, and its stun- ning scenery, showcasing some of the best of Vancouver Island, makes Cowichan Lake very popular with tourists and locals alike.

There is a lot to explore, and one could spend a very long time on Cowichan Lake and still not experi- ence all it has to offer.

Gord March, owner of Cowichan Fly and Tackle, offers some excellent advice for fishing Cowichan Lake.

In the early summer, he says, the top lures can be 3” tomics in #231, 140, 234 and 741. “Troll these faster than other lures,” he says. “Stay at least 150’ behind the boat.”

The best flatfish is a frog, yellow with red and black dots, skunk, or coho blue.

Some of the fastest action happens with eggs or roe and a corky rig on the bottom near the creek mouths.

Closer to fall, the fish will move closer to the surface, March notes, and during early mornings and later evenings, fish can be found even in the 20 to 30 foot range. “Gang trolls and worms are your best bet,” March says.

“In the deeper sections, neon worms show up well. Also, try the ever- popular 3” tomic plugs, wonder spoons and flatfish.”

There are even shore fishing oppor- tunities on Cowichan Lake, March says. “Fish with bait at the creek mouths. Use sliding weights and a corky rig. In the fall when the salmon are migrating through the lake, the top baits are home-cooked salmon eggs, salmon paste or roe, and worms, which are always worth a try.”

Gord March is always willing to share his successes and advice. Stop by Cowichan Fly and Tackle for some humour, free refreshments, and of course, all your fishing needs. Or visit his website at www. cowichanflyandtackle.ca.

LAKE ACCESS C

owichan Lake can be accessed in many different ways, at dif- ferent points around the lake.

From the town of Lake Cowichan, west of Duncan, there are several access points to the lake. Visit the info centre in town, or stop by Cowichan Fly and Tackle for infor- mation about the many places to launch boats in the lake.

There are several accommodation options as well, ranging from rustic camping, to more serviced camp- sites to motels and hotels in town.
