Rachel Lieu, Registrar/Archivist Keep it in Coronado

The Coronado Historical Association is always a bit disheartened whenever the City issues demolition permits for the quaint old bungalows that are scattered throughout the island. These homes didn’t meet enough criteria in the historic ordinance to be preserved by the City’s Historic Resource Commission. While old homes are filled with character and classic old charm, they lack granite counter tops, central air and luxury kitchens that many homeowners are looking for today.

Having grown up in a house that is now well over 100 years old, I understand how difficult these old houses can be to manage and maintain. They often become like that difficult

family member–the one you have to

apologize for at parties for their idiosyncratic behavior. For many new home owners, drafty windows, cramped rooms and creaking pipes just aren’t an option.

Before these houses are demolished, the Coronado Historical Association photographs the property inside and out, providing a snapshot of what Coronado “used to be.” We also collect small vintage fixtures, which we make available to current residents and Museum members for use when remodeling their homes. These door handles, knobs and light fixtures are available through the “Keep it in Coronado” program.

If you would like to

view the collection and acquire a fixture, possible through a donation to the Historical Association, please contact Rachel Lieu at 435-7242 to make an appointment.
