[EDITOR’S NOTE]
At the end of 2011, we lost one of the great thinkers of our time. Steve Jobs brought the world ideas and inventions that impacted billions of people, and more importantly, changed the way we communicate with each other. He once said, “you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. T is approach has never let me down, and it has made all the diff erence in my life.” As we start gearing up for business in the New Year, we can apply this quote to our operations. We can look back to celebrate our successes as well as review our setbacks, but planning
into the future can be daunting. Whether it is purchasing decisions, tackling new sales opportunities, or new product research and development, history can point you in the right direction but trying to see the end result remains the biggest challenge. T is issue highlights a few individuals and companies who have not only been faced with these decisions, but have also found the capacity to trust that the dots will eventually connect. We start in South Carolina and look at Charleston’s Rigging’s recent ownership transfer in the Sawin Family and how one family business without detailed plans for the future can now look back on what now seems clear. In Texas, Versabar brings groundbreaking technology beneath the ocean with its latest subsea lifting innovation, “T e Claw,” a product that is well ahead of its time. We also have an open discussion with industry leaders across America in our fi rst ‘Innovation Roundtable’ series and discuss subjects important to moving companies forward while also looking back at recent challenges. To see where we will be this time next year, or fi ve or even ten years from now, is impossible to know. But ‘knowing’ pales compared with ‘believing’ when it comes to moving forward. Experience is born from trial and error, not knowledge. What we learn when we trust the dots will connect one day is that – we’re moving in a direction, not standing still. After all, the only way to look back on things is to change your position. Keep us in the loop on all your company changes and news. Here’s to a great year
in 2012!
