4 Maidstone Borough Council In the Stone
Could you be entitled to lower Council Tax?
In the Stone is a new information service aimed at young people and parents.
A website –
www.inthestone.co.uk – has information on everything from bullying and homelessness to sexual health and money matters.
A launch took place in November. Pictured are three of the young people who helped create the project.
If you or someone who lives with you needs a room or an extra bathroom or kitchen, or extra space in your property to meet special needs arising from a disability, you may be entitled to a reduced council tax bill. The bill may be reduced to that of a property in the council tax band immediately below the band shown in the valuation list. If your property is in band A, you may still be entitled to a reduction even though there is no lower band on the valuation list. These reductions ensure that disabled people do not pay more council tax in respect of a space needed because of disability.

Kent Savers offers a mix of deposit accounts, usually no longer than 12-month bonds. Deposits are invested in ethical organisations such as Unity Trust Bank, the Co-op and a number of building societies which fit Kent Savers ethos.
Kent Savers offers customers an ethical approach to saving and borrowing money. It has a number of plans aimed at tackling financial exclusion within low income families in Kent.
The recession, the increasing availability of payday loans, and unscrupulous loan shark lenders has meant that many people are exploited with sky high interest rates, intimidation and threat.
Kent Savers provides a safe, economic and viable alternative which encourages saving as well as offering low interest rate loans.
Regulated by the Financial Services Agency, Kent Savers customers know that all money they deposit is 100% safe,
Benefit Fraud
The Maidstone Borough Council and Tunbridge Wells Borough Council joint fraud partnership saved the two local authorities more than £500,000 between April and November 2011. During that time it prosecuted eight offenders, issued 13 Administrative Penalties and eight formal cautions.
If you suspect someone is committing benefit fraud call the hotline on 01622 602196.
A payroll saving scheme where money is deducted at source helps promote a culture of regular saving especially among people who feel saving is beyond their financial capacity or because the discipline to save regularly has never been adopted.
By linking loans to savings Kent Savers can help move people’s finances onto a more secure footing as they begin to save at the same time they borrow. Kent Savers will appeal across the community with a return to the building society model of responsible lending and people focused services. It aims to support the alternative economy and bring benefits to all.
