Foreword

Trust is a bedrock ethical principle which ensures successful professional medical and dental relationships with patients. Trust is dependent on allowing patients to exercise their rights to determine for themselves exactly what happens to them in any medical or dental intervention. They must be able to give consent in the full light of all relevant information required by them to make a decision for or against an intervention.

While this is an overriding principle, there are situations that are more complex and where relationships with patients require more close scrutiny and further advice. Incapable adults, children and emergencies all call for special consideration.

This booklet is designed to help all practitioners in the basic principles of consent and the special circumstances which may prevail from time to time. It is easy to read and digest but can always be supplemented by contacting a professional adviser at MDDUS.
