Double lives of artist and dealer

Anna Brady reports

I DARE say a few people reading this often sit at their desks wistfully daydreaming about jacking in the day job and becoming an art dealer full time. One person who has taken that plunge, albeit later in life, is Christopher Davies, a chartered surveyor who retired as group property director at Barclay’s Bank two years ago. His interest in early 20th century British

art first arose while working at an auction house in the 1960s, and retirement gave him the chance to establish Christopher Davies Paintings, which he runs from his Oxfordshire home. This year the gallery has exhibited at a

few fairs, but Christopher will now hold his first London exhibition in collaboration with Luke Price, formerly of Rosebery’s auctioneers and now an independent art consultant, under the banner of PriceDavies Fine Art. The pair have hired The Gallery at 54

Shepherd Market in Mayfair for this debut show, which is devoted to the paintings of Marcus Grey (b.1960), who is both a practising artist and director of the paintings department at Rosebery’s. The exhibition, which runs this week

Émigré attractions

TWO paintings from the collection of a Russian émigré artist forced into exile in the 1920s were among the top lots at The Cotswold Auction Company’s (17.5% buyer’s premium) sale on October 7 in Cirencester’s Bingham Hall. Consigned through the émigré’s

family, the works were pursued by predominantly Russian bidders. The first painting, by Vasily

Shebuyev (1777-1855), entitled The Prophet and shown here, depicted a half-

length portrait of a bearded man writing in a book. It fetched £4500 (estimate £5000-7000). The second oil on canvas, attributed to

Victor Borisov-Musatov (1870-1905), of a wooded hilltop landscape populated with buildings, fetched the same sum against a £4000-6000 estimate.

from January 16 to 21, is titled Indian Summer and is inspired by Marcus’s travels through India in 2003 and 2004. Although born in London, Marcus moved to Canada with his family as a child and attended the Ontario College of Art, Toronto, before returning to London to study at The Slade in 1979. The vibrant works in the show are

priced from £300 for works on paper, painted by Marcus in India as a diary of his travels, through to £1500-3000 for the oils on canvas, which he says “developed over time, based on my memories, reflections and spiritual connection with the country”. Contact 07500 931720 or 01491
