station at Fareham that should prove attractive to commuters seeking an alternative to the car. However, we all know that to achieve modal shift you first need to achieve a shift in perception. At present, public transport is not seen as an attractive alternative to the private car in the Gosport peninsula because the infrastructure and vehicles are perceived as poor quality; through-ticketing is not available, and bus services are also affected by a heavily congested road network. This has meant that the focus for promoting the new BRT busway – both at the consultation stage and for the opening and beyond – is that it will herald a new era for public transport. In practice this represents an impressive package of measures that, as Marc Reddy, First’s Regional Commercial and Business Growth Director explains: “Will create a product that promises so much that it will be difficult not to try it.”
Above and beyond In November 2011, the County Council revealed a new identity for the South East Hampshire Bus Rapid Transit, that will highlight the benefits of the route and single out the buses that use it as being ‘above and beyond’ what people have

seen to date in a bus service. First’s Marc Reddy draws a comparison with park and ride schemes: “If you ask people getting off a park and ride bus whether they are a bus user, many will say ‘No’,” he says. “It’s the same with BRT.” The busway, street furniture, bus shelters and vehicles will be branded ‘Eclipse’, a name
that has been selected to reflect the superior bus travel experience this scheme offers; effectively ‘eclipsing’ bus travel as it has been perceived previously in the area. Colour, typography and a new logo convey the Eclipse experience as the bus service of the future. Bus operator First has invested £2.3 million
BUS STOP SECURITY COMMUNICATION SYSTEM Project Introduction:
As most people are aware, bus stops are not always the safest places to be waiting at night. They are sometimes located in dark areas that aren’t centrally located without a lot of pedestrian traffic nearby, which means they can frequently be prime locations for criminals to take advantage of commuters. But as many mass transit systems are being modernised, added security measures can easily be included to ensure improved safety and security.
System Requirements: Advantech’s partner, Erreuno, was looking to
update 40 bus stops across Avellino in Italy with modernised security systems that could provide commuters with a one-button press to reach a security attendant located in a central room. This attendant can monitor and view each bus stop to provide immediate response if necessary. This system required a robust and rugged network that could be linked to IP cameras, VoIP phones, safety buttons and HMI devices with reliable network capabilities.
Project Implementation: uEKI-7659CI 8+2G Combo Port Gigabit Managed Redundant Industrial Ethernet Switch
System Description:
There is one simple system that has been applied to 40 bus stops consisting of a camera, a local HMI device, a microphone, and Advantech’s EKI-7659CI Industrial Ethernet Switch. The switches are installed in the security system column, and are activated by a simple press of a

button. People can push the button on the column to easily reach an operator in a control room that can provide information and help. The redundant X-Ring created by the connected switches ensures that the network is always operational and ready to assist travels in need.
Conclusion:
Advanced technology allows many of our modern systems to be surprisingly simple, as is the case here. Though it only consists of a few devices, this remotely managed security system provides reliable communications from 40 locations to a central location, allowing passengers to travel with peace of mind, as information and security is only a button away
