BUS RAPID TRANSIT SUPPLEMENT 07

FARA ITS Solutions for Public Transport

Easy access to public transport is a success factor – it must be easy to get accurate route and schedule information; and to buy tickets.

dependent – e.g. when approaching the shopping mall the latest commercial is shown. Improved control and management in

today’s busy and congested traffic environment will contribute to timetable stability and thereby increase confidence in public transportation. The FARA Traffic Priority solution gives the vehicle priority when needed. The priority is given based on predefined rules including minutes delay, type of service, time of day, calendar etc. The FARA Traffic Priority solution will reduce travelling times and therefore ensure regularity – giving the passenger a smoother ride. The FARA Integrated solution is an example

For the commuter it may not be relevant to lookup departure information before a journey, but for everyone else it must be easy to access accurate departure information. Printed timetables have been the main source for decades and now internet travel planners are becoming more-and-more popular. The FARA Real Time Information (RTI) system gives real- time departure information on displays at stations and stops. Today, more-and-more people own smart phones and can therefore access information in new ways – you can have your personal RTI screen! Once you know the departure, you need to

purchase a ticket. Obtaining a valid ticket prior to boarding can speed up the boarding process and also removes cash from the vehicle which can help reduce fraud and robbery. New means of payments such as EMV and mobile phones are enabled in addition to the traditional smartcard.

The FARA WEB-shop allows the passenger using the internet to purchase tickets or reload the store value, paying with a credit card. The next time the passenger uses his smartcard, it is updated with the new tickets or value. In the vehicle, the FARA RTI system gives

next stop announcements both on displays and as voice announcements. But why not take it a step further? In an effort to increase the value for operators and passengers, FARA offers information based media content combined with entertainment, such as news, commercial advertisements and weather. This is made possible with the FARA Infotainment System allowing display of real-time information combined with advertising from multiple sources. The advertising can be time dependent – during the peak hours one type of content is shown whereas during mid-day the content is adapted to another target group and location

where all systems are running on one single platform with one single point of access to all relevant information for the driver. The integrated solution gives reduced installa - tion, hardware and management cost, and easy and effective maintenance.
